Sure Signs of Spring

Sure Signs of Spring

May 8, 2025

The air is buzzing with activity here on the farm as another growing season bursts into life! Life around the farm is in full gear as the to do lists just keep growing longer.

Thankfully, the weather has been cooperative for the most part, making work in the fields (such as plowing and planting) go quite smoothly. While we’ve been fortunate with the weather, allowing plowing and planting to proceed with little delay, the world of farming always keeps us on our toes with its unexpected challenges – something we’ve come to expect.

All Hands On Deck

It's that time of year when each day consists of some type of planting and often times multiple crops.

  • Strawberry plants have been planted in the fields and tunnels.
  • Sweet corn is planted every few days, often in the evenings because that’s when Paul has time to sneak away from other tasks to get it done.
  • Transplants like cucumbers, peppers, and melons have all been planted in the high tunnels.

As soon as we have time to work more ground in the fields, we will be onto planting pumpkins, squash, and gourds. There’s such a short time to get everything in the ground at this time of year, so it’s all hands on deck.

The First Sign of Spring

Amid the flurry of planting, we’re also celebrating the first fruits (or rather, spears!) of our labor - asparagus!  You can now find fresh-cut asparagus at our Garden Centers and retail partners.

Harvested by hand each morning, asparagus is truly a labor of love, but one that signifies that spring has officially arrived. Check out this springtime asparagus recipe that makes a delicious side dish and comes together quite quickly!

Garden Centers Open For the Season

Speaking of planting season, it’s time for you to plant as well! Opening all 8 Garden Center locations within 4 days was no easy feat, and we’re incredibly proud of our crews for making it happen!

We couldn’t be more excited to welcome you back with a beautiful selection of blooms this spring.  All locations are being restocked this week in preparation for Mother’s Day weekend, so stop on by and pick out your favorite hanging basket, patio pot, or let us help you design your own masterpiece.

We often get the question, "is it too early to plant?" Well, we are open and our plants stay outside at night, so we think it’s safe to say that you’re good to go for the season.

The common saying is to wait until Memorial Day to plant tomatoes outside, but the forecast looks safe to us. You may end up covering one or two nights during the month of May, but overall, your plants will be just fine in most cases. You’ll find a wide selection of vegetable and herb plants that are ready to go, helping you create the home garden of your dreams.
