Navigating Spring's Swings

Navigating Spring's Swings

May 22, 2025

What a week it's been! A sudden swing in temperatures this past week served as a powerful reminder that Mother Nature truly is in charge. Just seven days ago, we were basking in glorious sunshine and temperatures in the mid-80s, making incredible progress in the fields. This week, however, brought much-needed rain.

While the rain is a welcome sight, it also has brought temperatures hovering uncomfortably close to freezing. As farmers, this cool, wet spell presents its own set of challenges, not just for us working outdoors, but for our delicate flowers and many of the young crops already in the ground.

These cold, wet days make nearly every task around the farm significantly more difficult. Fields turn into muddy messes, and tasks often take twice as long. To adapt, we had most of our crews take some well-deserved time off earlier in the week.

This allows us to strategically utilize those valuable hours later in the week when we can hopefully be more productive in the fields – whether that's harvesting delicious asparagus, carefully planting new transplants, or diligently shipping vibrant flowers to our retail Garden Centers. It's all about working with the weather, not against it!

Asparagus Season in Full Swing!

Despite the recent cool down, we're still in the height of asparagus harvest season! While the lower temperatures have slowed the growth of this beloved crop, rest assured, the cool weather doesn't harm it. It simply means we need to wait a few extra days between harvests, resulting in a slightly smaller quantity to sell at the moment.

It's all part of the natural farming cycle, and we know that as soon as the temperatures warm back up, the asparagus will start shooting up faster than ever. The homegrown asparagus season is much too short in our opinion, so don't miss your chance to pick up some fresh, locally grown asparagus from our Garden Centers or retail partners. It's truly a spring delicacy.

What's Coming Soon to Your Table?

Get ready! The first harvest of our ever-so-popular chub cucumbers is just around the corner. We're anticipating a large enough harvest to send to our Garden Centers within the next two weeks or so.

And that's just the beginning of the exciting lineup! Soon after, you can look forward to fresh rhubarb, followed by the very first of our zucchini and sweet grape tomatoes, weather permitting, of course.

But the real excitement builds for our incredibly popular strawberries, which we're targeting for the middle to end of June. As always, farming is dictated by Mother Nature's unpredictable schedule, but as of today, that's what our delicious outlook is shaping up to look like!

Busy Days in the Fields

We're constantly working behind the scenes to bring you the best produce throughout the season. Our sweet corn succession plantings continue weekly, ensuring you'll have your favorite sweet corn all summer long. You'll be happy to hear that our famous "State Fair" sweet corn will be going into the ground very soon.

Last week was a monumental effort as we successfully started and finished planting all our squash and pumpkins. This was no small feat! With dozens of different varieties and relatively smaller quantities of each, the process of changing seeds and planter plates often takes more time than the actual planting itself.

We're incredibly grateful for that stretch of warm weather we had recently, which truly helped us get ahead on this essential field work.

See You Soon!

As you can see, another bountiful season is well underway here on the farm. It's been wonderful to see so many of you returning to our Garden Centers already this spring, and your enthusiasm truly fuels our passion. We remain dedicated to cultivating and bringing you the freshest, highest quality, locally grown produce we can.
