Whiplash

Whiplash

September 11, 2025

Is it just us, or has the weather been a little indecisive lately? One day we're enjoying a warm, 80-degree day, and the next we're bundling up as temps drop into the 50s.

This seasonal shift, often called whiplash, happens every year, yet it always seems to catch us by surprise. While the cooler weather was a nice break from the heat, it did slow down the ripening of some of our favorite summer vegetables like tomatoes, melons, and cucumbers.

As the days grow shorter, the harvest schedule shifts. With less daylight for crops to grow, we see more time between harvests and slightly less production. But don't worry, we still have plenty of summer favorites available, including sweet corn, green beans, zucchini, strawberries, and a variety of melons.

While we're still enjoying the last of summer's bounty, the great fall harvest has officially begun! Our fields are buzzing with activity as we harvest pumpkins and gourds of all shapes and sizes. We've started with pie pumpkins and specialty pumpkins and have also done a first pass through our squash fields. If you're ready for those classic fall flavors, they're waiting for you at our retail locations.

The Transformation To Fall

The transformation to fall is happening right here on our farm, too. Our parking lot has become a staging area for all the pumpkins and gourds we're bringing in from the fields. It's a truly beautiful sight as we sort and clean them, with a vibrant mix of colors: bright orange from traditional pumpkins, pops of red from Cinderella gourds, white from Ghost pumpkins, and even shades of blue from Jarrahdale squash.

The first shipments of fall décor, including corn stalks, pumpkins, and gourds, are heading out to all of our garden centers this week. We know some of you love to get a head start on decorating. If your summer flowers are looking a bit tired, now's the perfect time to replace them with some gorgeous fall mums and unique pumpkins.

The apple harvest is in full swing. We've finished harvesting our First Kiss apples and are well into the SweeTango harvest. It won't be long until we start picking the famous Honeycrisp apples. We're working hard to keep all our summer crops going while adding these new fall harvests. Winter is long, so let's enjoy all the fresh flavors of the season while we can.

Stock Up for the Winter

If you've been putting off your canning or freezing projects, now is the time to get them done! We still have a great supply of sweet corn, canning tomatoes, pickling cucumbers, beets, and even Colorado peaches through this week. Mother Nature can flip a switch at any time and end the season, so don't wait too long. Get your orders in and enjoy the flavors of summer on the coldest days of winter.

It's hard to say goodbye to the days of summer, but we’re leaning into the cooler days of fall. What are you looking forward to this month?
