A Tale of Two Seasons

A Tale of Two Seasons

August 28, 2025

It's the final countdown of summer. While many of us see Labor Day as the unofficial end of the season, here at the farm, it’s a big turning point. A few of our seasonal vegetable stands will close after Labor Day, and we’ll shift our sole focus from summer harvests and add in our fall favorites.

This time of year brings big changes for everyone—the start of a new school year, cooler mornings, and the beginning of apple season. But even with fall knocking on the door, we're not wishing summer away. There's still so much to enjoy, and we think late August into mid-September is the absolute best time for Minnesota produce.

The Sweet Spot for Local Goods

When people think of prime produce season, they often think of July and the first sweet corn of the year. But we believe the real "prime time" is right now!

It's when our watermelon and cantaloupe are perfectly ripe, and we're still harvesting the most amazing varieties of sweet corn. You'll also find an abundance of tomatoes and cucumbers, perfect for fresh salads and sandwiches.

We also have a huge variety of peppers. You can grab sweet Italian peppers that are fantastic for snacking, poblanos for stuffing, or serranos to add a kick of heat to your cooking.

As we wrap up our sweet corn harvest for the Corn Roast at the Minnesota State Fair, we're preparing to shift into fall mode. After the final harvest of fair corn, fall mode is activated. That means cutting corn stalks to dry, beginning the winter squash harvest, and, of course, the great pumpkin harvest.

It’s tough to switch gears when we're still harvesting summer produce, but the demand for fall decor has already started. Customers are ready for their pumpkins and specialty gourds in early September, so some days we find ourselves harvesting summer produce in the morning and fall crops in the afternoon. The seasons are colliding, and there is no shortage of work to be done!

Fall Favorites Are Arriving

If you've visited our Garden Centers recently, you've seen that fall mums have already arrived. We'll continue to build our inventory of fall decorative items each week. By the second week of September, our Garden Centers will be stocked with all your favorites, like pumpkins, straw bales, and corn stalks.

As we celebrate the unofficial end of summer this weekend, be sure to get outside and enjoy it! Stop by a local farmers' market or your nearest Untiedt's location to stock up on fresh produce. Whether you pick up some sweet corn, tomatoes, potatoes, green beans, or watermelon, you can't go wrong.

Looking to preserve the taste of summer? Don't forget, you can order many of our items in bulk to put away for the winter. Check out our bulk ordering page for more information.
