Spring Energy

Spring Energy

April 16, 2026

We’re hopeful that the snow is finally a distant memory, though in Minnesota, we know better than to make promises!

In the meantime, the farm is buzzing back to life. There is a specific kind of "spring energy" here. It's a mix of muddy boots, frantic planting, and the pure joy of seeing those first green sprouts break through the soil. It’s an exhausting, exhilarating time of year, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

From the High Tunnels to the Fields

With the frost (hopefully) retreating, we are "skinning" our high tunnels one by one. The beds are prepared, and the 2026 season is officially underway!

  • Onions: Our first transplants are officially in the ground, both in the tunnels and, as of Monday, out in the open fields.
  • Tomatoes: Inside the tunnels, our tomatoes are soaking up the sun. It’s incredible how powerful the spring sun is; even on cloudy days, the tunnels stay warm and cozy. Soon, we’ll be rolling up the sides to keep them from getting too toasted!

For a little inside scoop, check out this video as Paul shares a quick lesson on our secret to success with growing tomatoes!

The Secret Life of Apples

Apple tree in full blossom

We are just wrapping up a month of daily pruning in the orchard. It’s a massive undertaking, but the reward is worth every hour spent in the cold. Now that we’ve done our part, we wait for nature to take over. As temperatures rise, we’ll watch for the blossoms and wait for the bees to work their magic.

Every First Kiss, SweeTango, and Honeycrisp you enjoy this fall starts right here and right now, with a pair of pruning shears and a lot of patience. There’s nothing quite like a Minnesota-grown apple, and we can’t wait for you to taste the results.

Sweet Corn & Summer Dreams

It isn’t officially spring until the first sweet corn hits the soil. Paul was out this past weekend starting our first round of planting. He’ll continue planting every few days for the next two months to ensure that once July hits, we have a steady supply of fresh ears all the way until the first frost. Who’s ready for that first buttery crunch?

Mark Your Calendars: Farm Stands are Opening Soon!

We aren’t just busy in the dirt, we’re also getting ready to see you.

  • Greenhouses: We are building greenhouses at seven Farm Stand locations over the next week.
  • Opening Day: We are aiming to welcome you back the week of April 27th, weather permitting of course.

Keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram for the official opening schedule. Now is the perfect time to start dreaming of the colors you want on your front porch this year.

Farmer-to-Friend Advice

Hand grabbing soil

If you’re itching to get into your own garden, don’t rush the soil! Squeeze a handful of dirt: if it stays in a tight, wet ball, it’s too wet to work. Wait until it crumbles easily in your hand. This prevents soil compaction and ensures your plants' roots can breathe.

The days are getting longer, and so are our to-do lists. While we’re running a bit ragged right now, we are fueled by the excitement of everything waking up around us. We can’t wait to see your smiling faces at the stands very soon. See you in the sunshine!
