Mud, Sun, and the Smell of Spring

Mud, Sun, and the Smell of Spring

February 19, 2026

Water dripping from the rooflines, puddles in the parking lot, and mud. Lots of mud. What a welcome relief the sunshine and warm weather were this past weekend! It’s put a little pep in our step and a "can-do" attitude in our hearts as we head into a new season. Even though winter certainly has a few more tricks up its sleeve, every day without snow is one day closer to Spring.

First Crop of 2026: Epicurean Onions

It’s hard to believe we’re already in the middle of February, but the 2026 planting season is officially underway.

What’s the first vegetable to hit the dirt? Onions! We are currently busy seeding our famous, giant Epicurean onions. Here’s a look at how we get them started:

  • Step 1: The Plug Tray. Tiny seeds are tucked into trays to begin their journey.
  • Step 2: Geothermal Heat. We transfer the trays to a greenhouse with a geothermal system that cycles warm water under the concrete floor. This ensures even germination.
  • Step 3: Growth & Transition. Once the sprouts reach 4 to 5 inches, they move to a separate greenhouse before eventually being transplanted into our high tunnels.

Behind the Scenes: Maintenance Mode

When we aren't in the greenhouse, we’re in the shop. This is also the time of year we go through our tractors, skid steers, and machinery.

Maintenance is never truly done, but tackling the big projects now makes the inevitable mid-season fixes a lot easier to handle.
