Tomatoes

Untiedt’s Famous Red Ripe Slicing Tomatoes are the heavy hitter of summer. We choose our slicing tomatoes for their thin skins and that perfect balance of acid and sugar that you simply cannot find in a big box grocery store.

Sold at farm stands by the pound. Pick a tomato that feels heavy for its size - that's the juice! Don't worry about "catfacing" (little scars or bumps on the bottom); on a farm-grown tomato, that’s often a sign of an heirloom variety with incredible flavor. Typically in season from mid-June through October.

Are you looking for tomatoes for canning? You can preorder them by the half bushel. Bulk produce preorders are typically available mid July through October.

When this product is in season, it can be purchased at Untiedt's Farm Stands. We harvest by hand and deliver to our Farm Stands daily.

Availability is dependent on weather conditions and overall supply. Not all products are available on all days at all Farm Stand locations.

Daily market prices vary.

When you cook tomatoes, consider removing the skins first so they don’t float around in your dish. To do so, score the end of the tomato with an “X,” dunk whole tomatoes in boiling water for 30 seconds, lift out with slotted spoon, plunge into ice water, and the skins will slide off.

Tomatoes should be stored at room temperature out of the sun stem side down. Putting them in a paper bag will accelerate the ripening process.

Do not refrigerate tomatoes. Cold temperatures kill the flavor-producing enzymes and turn the texture mealy.

Tomatoes can be frozen whole with the skin on. The skins will slide right off when they thaw. Simply pop the washed tomatoes whole into a Ziplock bag. Thawed tomatoes are appropriate only for cooking sauces, salsas, or purees.

Canning tomatoes is a popular summertime activity that lets you capture the fresh taste of home-grown tomatoes for year-round enjoyment. Untiedt's offers discounts on fresh tomatoes in bulk when you preorder online.
